As parents of school-aged kids, you’re probably swamped with birthday party invitations every so often. If it’s your turn to celebrate your kid’s birthday with their friends and classmate, it’s time to put your planning hat on.
Here’s an expansive list of dos and don’ts that’ll ensure your kid’s party is a memorable and fun event for everyone present:
Not a week before the party, but at least a month in advance! Remember, people are busy and will probably need to change their plans to make it to your kid’s birthday party. It’s even more important to book a date early if you’re planning to throw the party during the holiday season or have several other kids in the class whose birthdays fall on the same week or month.
It’s fine if your kid doesn’t want everyone there, but if you’re inviting 20 out of 22 kids, you’re probably going to hurt feelings. Either keep it a discreet affair or invite everyone. This also includes any special-needs classmates your kid has.
Let’s be honest; no adult wants to spend precious weekends at a birthday party for kids. So, the least you can do is make it enjoyable for the parents. You can bring in real food for adults, like pizzas, hotdogs, bagels, and coffee.
A request for gifts makes you look materialistic and greedy. Most parents will already feel compelled to bring something for your kid, so don’t provide a wish-list directory. If you do, make sure it includes budget-friendly options.
It’s a kid’s party! No matter how much you plan, there will be messes and meltdowns. It’s totally expected. Food will be spilled; a kid might cry; balloons shall pop — so what? Fix the situation rather than get flustered.
Remind the parents if you need them to keep a change of clothes for their kids because of certain activities. For example, if there’s a swimming pool involved, kids will require a change of clothes! If there’s a trampoline to jump on, they’ll need socks. Just let the parents know in advance.
Even if your kid is super excited and impatient about the gifts, just don’t let them open them at the party. No kid wants to watch another open up a bunch of toys they can’t have. Plus, parents may judge the value of the gifts others have given.
Thank you notes are a must. Make sure you send a personalized, meaningful note to each parent for taking the time to send their kid to the party and accompany them. You can send these later by email or include a handwritten note in the goody bag you’ll be hanging over.
